Kalliope Panoutsopoulou worked in Human Genetics from December 2008 until February 2019 researching the genetic causes of common complex diseases and medically-relevant traits. She became a Career Development Fellow in 2013, leading research on the genetic and environmental determinants of osteoarthritis and related traits. During her 10 years as a statistical geneticist at the Institute, in collaboration with the arcOGEN and TREAT-OA consortia, Kalliope identified numerous genetic loci associated with osteoarthritis, yielding important insights into the disease’s causes, heritability and comorbidities. She identified the first genetic link of osteoarthritis and obesity demonstrating the causal role of obesity in osteoarthritis, and the first genetic link of osteoarthritis and diabetes that is not mediated via obesity. Kalliope was involved in population genetics studies of isolated populations from the HELIC study and contributed to large-scale meta-analyses from the UK10K, EGG and GIANT consortia that led to the identification of numerous cardio-metabolic and anthropometric loci.
